After studying at the Government Institute of Arts in Kolkata with Zainul Abedin, renowned as the founder of Bangladeshi Modern Art, Quamrul Hassan migrated to Dhaka with Abedin at the time of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. He was strongly influenced by Bengali folk art, pat (scroll painting with narration), and tried to fuse it with the technique of Western painting, establishing a figurative and narrative style with bright colors. The artist’s representative works depict rural life, featuring women and animals using powerful and simple brushstrokes. His art incorporating elements of folk art made a great contribution to Bangladesh Hassan was also known for his caricatures of Yahya Khan, the Pakistani president who ordered genocide in Bangladesh during the Bangladesh Liberation War , and Bangladesh dictator President Ershad (in office 1983–90).
