The first ASEAN Symposium on Aesthetics is held with workshops and an exhibition, Tradition, the Source of Inspiration. Malaysian artists, including Ismail Zain and Wong Hoy Cheong, discuss the link between local art history and modernism. The exhibition tours to Japan in the following May.
